Why Are Kenyans Sending Nyama Choma Home From The US?

Do you want to torture some information out of a Kenyan? That's easy, especially if that Kenyan has not had Nyama choma or specifically mbuzi choma for a long time all you need to do is show them photographs of Nyama choma or even better present a few pieces of well roasted nyam choms and then you can start asking all the questions you want.

"What do you know about XYZ? Tell me everything you know and all this nyama choma is yours."

If it is genuine Kenyan you are dealing with, I can assure you that they will start talking.

So it is not really surprising that some of the gifts being send back home from Kenyans in the US includes Nyama choma, even whole mbuzis.

The service being used to accomplish this is Mama Mikes, that Kenyan web site that has been helping thousands of Kenyans in the diasporas send home the sort of gifts that inspires villagers to sing their praises for days on end.

According to Mama Mikes they have recently received a request from a customer to buy a pizza for someone in Kenya and to deliver it. That is an interesting prospect receiveing a pizza for lunch all the way from the United States of A.

Other popular requests include paying school fees and recently cell phone airtime which costs only $2.49 to send online at Mama Mikes.

But Kenyans are getting even more creative in their gift giving. Somebody is planning to buy their grandmother a Friesian dairy cow. That is the sort of gift that the recipient will never forget about in a hurry because it gives them a daily source of income in a country where cash is increasingly scarce.

Shop Online For Mobile Phones In Kenya

In a country where for many years, telephones were not accessible to a huge chunk of the productive segment of the population, mobile phones have changed Kenya, in much the same way that they have changed most of Africa.

Actually cell phones in Kenya have revolutionized trade and business and the evidence is that it is now the favored method of communication. In fact the most amazing thing is that it is now difficult to imagine how we ever managed without them.

Before it would take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks for the message to reach the welder or fundi you were looking for and for him to show up for the small job you wanted done. Now you can get in touch with them instantly and it is possible for them to be at your doorstep embarking on the job before an hour is up. Truly amazing, and it has all been made possible by the mobile phone.

But mobile phones are not only used for calls, there are a number of other uses that Kenyans are increasingly putting them to.

Camera phones, have helped a few Kenyans sell very highly priced photographs to the press. Probably the best example is (this photo of the Artur brothers and the President's daughter, which was sold to one of the leading local newspapers for an unspecified amount of cash and was taken by a cell phone camera.)

Increasingly folks are also surfing the World Wide Web with their cell phones. Either to visit their favorite sites or to simply check on an urgent email that they've been waiting for.

Again, with the rates falling fast for International calls via a mobile phone, it means that a lucrative International business can also be very successfully run using only a cell phone. Actually the truth is that this is one valuable business tool that is practically indispensable to many people these days.

The Forgotten Benefits Of Barter: Save Money Today

Before cash came along people were doing just fine with Barter trade. If you had some delicious game meat you had just hunted, there was no way you were going to eat it all before it got stale (there were no refrigerators in them days) so it made sense to exchange some of it for fruits (your desert).

What most people don't know is that barter still works today and can be highly rewarding and profitable because of the following benefits;

a) You save on cash by exchanging what you don't need for what you need. Every house has something of value lying around somewhere that is no longer used that can be exchanged for something that is badly needed.

b) It is a much easier way of selling your services and skills in a depressed economy like Kenya at the moment. For instance, an accountant can accept Hi-tech electronics in exchange for doing the books for an electronics shop and then sell the item later through classified ads in the newspapers or even through the Kenya Online Directory.

c) Barter often opens the door for repeat cash business later because it is an excellent way to advertise your products/services or even skills and talents. The way it works is that the first time you barter trade for whatever it is and then later the person you did the trade with likes what they got so much that they place repeat orders and this time for cash.

Send that email now to exchange something with other visitors to the Kenya Online Directory. Send details NOW to email; seo4free93 (at) gmail.com

Computer Hardware And Software In Kenya: How Computer Spreadsheet Software Made Me Rich

I have run various small businesses in Kenya for years and my weakness has always been in keeping track of things accurately and keeping records.

Well, my businesses grew in size and I was able to have people working for me whom I gave the responsibility for keeping the records for me. Still, there was always a problem, people behind in posting and so on.

You may be reading this and wondering what the big deal is all about. But surely you must know that accounts and keeping records help an entrepreneur to see a developing problem in the business long before it has become a full blown crisis.

For instance you may have recently changed suppliers for a certain material that you use every day and the new supplier is charging you more. However you do not immediately see the impact it has on your business until your accounts show you that you are paying more for material that is of lower quality than your previous one and because you are doing this, you now need twice the quantity you needed before to keep on producing. So in real terms it may be that you are no longer producing at a profit.

Now if you do not look at your numbers weekly, it means that you will probably find out what has happened when it is too late and your business is already bankrupt. Personally I have an accounting system where I look at my numbers daily. I need to know the daily profit I am making. This way I have been able to correct situations before they even become a problem.

The truth is that I would never have done it without computers and without the spreadsheet software I use. Today I take both for granted but in actual fact it is some miracle. Imagine a simple spreadsheet with formulas and all that needs to be done is to enter the daily costs and daily sales as they happen. The totals come automatically and all I do at the end of the day is print out one sheet of paper and presto, I have all my numbers for the day on one sheet of paper. And before I go home I know exactly how much money I have made or lost that day.

Are You Denying Yourself Profits Because You Do Not Know What Computers Can Do For You?

Recently I visited a small business in a major Kenyan city where computers are put to some rather unique use.

They are used mainly as decoration and to impress clients that the business uses computers. A visit to one of the backrooms will tell you otherwise as it is filled with archaic files and papers are strewn all over the place.

I later discovered that most of the computers are not even working. Only the secretary's is and it is used only for writing letters.

Amazing how somebody can try and use computers to enhance the image of their business, is it not?

Sadly there are too many entrepreneurs in Kenya who are yet to appreciate the value of computers. Many do not realize that there are numerous businesses that would just not be viable were it not for computers and what they can do. And it is not just about keeping your labor costs low. It is about computers increasing efficiency and the speed with which you are able to deliver services.

And you do not even have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what computers can do for you. All you have to do is get in touch with one of the many excellent computer companies we have in the country (some of them are listed below this article, just click on the name of the company you are interested in visiting—even online.) Many of these companies will give you free advice on what you need to do to incorporate computers into your business and see profits hitting the roof.

In closing, here are a few examples of how some smart Kenyan entrepreneurs are laughing all the way to the bank, thanks mainly to their use of computers and information technology.

i) Efficient computerized accounts department shows you a crisis long before it happens because accurate up-to-the-minute reports are produced daily.

ii) Some Kenyan computerized companies have discovered how to use their websites to attract valuable business leads and greatly enhance their marketing. They have realized that increasingly Kenyans are turning online to look for products and services because it is so convenient and there one avoids the risk of running into a carjacker as they drive around looking for something. There is little doubt that computers are the most powerful marketing tool for tomorrow

iii) Some smart Kenyan entrepreneurs are now running very lean but profitable branches countrywide with some branches situated in very remote towns. They are simply making their systems accessible to each other using Internet connectivity.

iv) Other companies are relying on linked computers for communication and to allow traveling staff members to continue working with each other even when the people are involved are scattered in remote locations around the country.

v) Online training of staff countrywide at the same time using Internet connectivity than now includes video conferencing. (Read more about what video conferencing is).

Used Computers In Kenya Have Revolutionized Many Businesses

See list of places where you can purchase used computers countrywide. Please help us make this list as comprehensive as possible and add companies that we have left out in the comments area.

There was much excitement in the early 90s when a new computer company, the first to assemble computers in Kenya, burst onto the local scene. The company, still in existence today, was called Diamond Systems and its' principal shareholder was an American, John Malone.

It caused shock waves in the market because before its' arrival companies were cashing in on the ignorance of the public to make unjustifiable huge mark ups and profits. Diamond Systems was responsible for dramatically bringing down the prices of new PCs in Kenya.

Today we have come a long way and now one can easily get a reasonably powerful and efficient Used PC complete with Monitor, keyboard and mouse for as little as Kshs 7,000.

Many people do not realize the impact this has had in revolutionizing many businesses in the country. Just think of all those computer colleges that would not have been in existence if these cheap used computers were not available. What about the cyber cafes?

One publishing business I know in Kenya has prospered tremendously with the exclusive use of cheap used computers.

Useful tips in purchasing a used computer

- Ask yourself what you want to do with the computer so that you are able to arrive at the decision of what used computer to purchase, a used PII, used PIII or used PIV.

- Check the hard drive. They sometimes fail in used computers. But even when they do, it will not be too difficult to replace it.

- You can hardly go wrong with branded used computers, which tend to be a lot more durable. The most popular brands in the market are Used Compaqs, Used Dells and Used IBMs.

Some places where you can purchase a used computer today (just click on the business you want to check out;

1) 15" monitors @Kshs 2,000, optical mouse @300, wireless mouse @900, keyboards @350 All available at Disktech Systems

2) Davetech

3) DNI (used computers in Mombasa)

4) Branded Used Computers Compaq/Dell/IBM at Digital Technics

5) High Quality Refurbished PCs Sent To Kenya by UK Not-For-Profit-Organization

New Product Gives Kenyans Foolproof Way To Carry Cash Around, Can Also Be Used For Web Business Online Payments

There is no doubt that Kenya is currently a very dangerous place for anybody to carry cash around with them. ATMs have helped except that they cannot be found deep in the countryside and then there is the fact that thugs have sometimes forced their victims to hand over their ATM cards and give them their pin numbers and have then gone to ATMs while still holding them hostage and cleaned their accounts.

But now there is a new option that more and more Kenyans are using to carry cash around. It is Safaricom's M-pesa service. This is mostly a money transfer service using the popular and widespread countrywide Safaricom cell phone network. The thing to do if you are on a bus (which can be hijacked and mobile phones stolen) is to take out your sim card from your phone so that even if are robbed, you retain the sim card. As soon as you get to the nearest town you can get to a M-pesa agent and borrow a cell phone to put your sim card inside and draw out cash. Very convenient, more so because M-pesa agents are spread all over the country.

Although what I have just described is a common use of the M-pesa service, it is not the primary one. M-pesa is essentially a money transfer service at rates that nobody else in the market can compete with. You can even send money to somebody who is not a Safaricom subscriber.

But the really exciting thing about this new product that is yet to be exploited by Kenyans is that it can be used as the perfect payment system for an online web-based business. (Get details here on how to launch your own International web based business today)

Here's the full list of things you can do with M-pesa;

# Deposit Money
# Withdraw Money
# Transfer (Send) Money To another M-Pesa customer
# Transfer (send) To someone who is NOT an M-Pesa customer, they don't even need to be a Safaricom subscriber
# Buy Safaricom prepaid airtime.
# M-Pesa is available to everyone, even if you do not have a bank account.
