There was much excitement in the early 90s when a new computer company, the first to assemble computers in Kenya, burst onto the local scene. The company, still in existence today, was called Diamond Systems and its' principal shareholder was an American, John Malone.
It caused shock waves in the market because before its' arrival companies were cashing in on the ignorance of the public to make unjustifiable huge mark ups and profits. Diamond Systems was responsible for dramatically bringing down the prices of new PCs in Kenya.
Today we have come a long way and now one can easily get a reasonably powerful and efficient Used PC complete with Monitor, keyboard and mouse for as little as Kshs 7,000.
Many people do not realize the impact this has had in revolutionizing many businesses in the country. Just think of all those computer colleges that would not have been in existence if these cheap used computers were not available. What about the cyber cafes?
One publishing business I know in Kenya has prospered tremendously with the exclusive use of cheap used computers.
Useful tips in purchasing a used computer
- Ask yourself what you want to do with the computer so that you are able to arrive at the decision of what used computer to purchase, a used PII, used PIII or used PIV.
- Check the hard drive. They sometimes fail in used computers. But even when they do, it will not be too difficult to replace it.
- You can hardly go wrong with branded used computers, which tend to be a lot more durable. The most popular brands in the market are Used Compaqs, Used Dells and Used IBMs.
